From the vision of “Tiny Toones” Hip Hop Cambodiat.

When low incomes, marginalized youth have access to free education and a strong support system within a creative and safe environment, it is expected that these conditions will contribute to the following changes:

  • The rate of illiteracy among youth will decrease.
  • The number of at-risk youth engaging in harmful practices such as street work, drug abuse or gang involvement will decrease as a result of youth developing the ability to problem solve and foresee consequences.
  • Youth will become less susceptible to HIV/AIDS infection through knowledge and preventative behavior.
  • The number of students participating in education will increase which will provide them with a range of meaningful employment opportunities.
  • Youth can develop leadership skills and self‐ expression and achieve stronger self-empowerment.
  • Youth can develop the vision and skills to plan for and build a bright future and lifestyle for themselves and their families.
  • Youth will gain self‐ confidence and motivation by developing their ability to communicate effectively using the arts.
  • Youth can help supplement their family’s income using their artistic talents, without having to neglect their education.
  • With the support of role models, youth will learn how to be a positive influence among their peers and in their communities.

Objectives:

  • To develop awareness raising programs using our educational and artistic skills focusing on vulnerable populations, commencing with the slum communities and especially street children.
  • To provide each child with the possibility of hope, liberty and security.
  • Use performing arts, dance, acrobatics and circus as an educational tool and a way to build confidence and resolve feelings of isolation and abandon in youth cornered by complex problems such as human trafficking, war, AIDS/HIV, poverty and war.
  • Create a base of local teachers, performers and creations that can be available for assisting children in trauma or disaster or vulnerable situations all over Thailand.
  • Establish a training program for local performing artists to assist “Youth at Risk” in rural/ urban areas.
  • Communicate and research available scholarships both local and international, both artistic and academic for children in rural/ urban areas of Thailand.
  • To use dance acrobatics, hip hop and traditional performing arts to foster leadership and a personal and social development for youth at risk, and also create performances as a means of communication and self expression.
  • Create a communication link through performers and teachers living in Bangkok with migrant and vulnerable Children in rural areas to avoid them becoming victim to slave labor, prostitution and human trafficking.

A Bit About Us

Posted: August 19, 2013 in Street Arts for Street Kids

Our BBoys

Our local Thai teachers are the most famous Break Dance (Bboy) team in Thailand – ‘99 Flavas’ all members originating from poor families. They are dedicated, as many are in their hip-hop community all over Asia to assist their disadvantaged brothers and sisters.

These teachers, given their success and reputation in Thailand, make it very easy for us to reach out to these children and show them a safe road to a new future.

The reputation of our interventions with youth all over Asia has resulted in a network currently set up with the support of Cirque du Soleil- www.ascassociation.wordpress.com

At the Hub Siadek Youth Club in Bangkok, hip-hop and arts classes are currently given in daily after school programs, weekend workshops and competitions in neighboring slum areas and gathering areas for young prostitutes.

Currently The Hub run these projects on a short-term volunteer basis with very small funds. Financial support would allow for a full time ‘Street Arts for Street Kids’ program that will expand to other urban and refugee zones all over Thailand.

This first full time program will also allow many of our pioneer students, soon turning 18 (adults) to learn to become teachers to respond to the huge demand we have to assist vulnerable children in centers from Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Bangkok, and Families in detention centers (OIM) and refugee camps on the Thai/ Burma border.

Upon becoming successfully funded, this project will become the first full-time project of its kind in South East Asia.

Inspired by similar projects in Cambodia, Uganda and Vietnam, this proposal in based on the success of hip-hop as a tool to engage and empower disadvantaged youth across the globe.

Our mission is to engage young people in elements of hip-hop culture to build leadership skills and promote social responsibility. It serves to teach people hip-hop & break-dance and how to pass on those skills to others, as well as promoting leadership skills, social responsibility and positive change to members and local communities.

Hand1

Hip hop comes from the streets and it can help to strengthen a community with greater bonds of care and support. In this way it directly brings youth out of isolation, builds confidence and guides them away from various dangers of living unprotected. The plan for this proposal is to work directly with abandoned and stateless children living on the streets or in isolation with the co-operation of the Hub Saidek Youth Club in Bangkok.

Our is based on the success of our young Hip-hop and street arts teachers, many who grew up in poor or disadvantaged communities working directly with at-risk and vulnerable youth. These young teachers inspire our children and teach them to have hope. The teachers themselves are the example that there is a way out of isolation and more than anything, they give the children guidance, care and a safe environment for them to develop as children should.
